Tell me this hasn’t happened to you: forget to write down the task, idea not to forget it?
Memory is not working effectively as IT professionals would like to. We need to have the flexibility and hyper-scale needed to store and retrieve large amounts of data. Let’s just take into account CISSP All-in-One Exam Guide, 6th Edition. It’s only one, 1300+ pages! I’d like to switch on premium storage for that 🙂
It takes exhaustive amount of time and efforts to get certified. The worst case is when you are not experienced in all domains.
Didn’t you found it interesting that young people forget information quicker than old? We even pass information through.
“With no background in information security, I’m afraid you’ll have more than 80 hours of background reading to do before you can get started on the real curriculum itself. Even that will probably take more than 100 hours to complete — given that you’ll be learning all or most of this material for the first time.
My best guess is that you’ll need 120 hours to ground yourself thoroughly in information security terms, concepts and best practices. Then, count on another 120 hours to prepare for the CISSP exam itself.”
I thought that after getting my PhD at least I’ll get to know how to learn. Seems not. Feel that my approach was intuitive rather than structured.
That’s why I’m interested to clarify how our brain is working in that direction. Is there any button to switch it on if necessary. Switch off I think is also good 🙂
You may agree that it’s nonsense just to recall you’ve learnt it and nothing more, no more details. Standard memorization technics don’t work here. Those relevant to remember numbers, foreign words, pictures, … It’s 1300+ pages of technical stuff!
Sujith Prasad says “You should be spending all your time for the preparations. Say good bye to all other activities till you pass the exam. Let your friends and family know that you won’t be available for a few months. If you are a family person, support from your family is pivotal. If you have kids, they are going to miss you for a few months.” And it’s true.
Here are a few reasons why we forget the information:
- Retrieval failure (неспособность вспомнить) – failure to retrieve information due to inaccessibility. If the information is not used again after some time it or a link to it will be deleted from memory forever. May be caused because the person did not pay attention in the first place.
- Interference (внешние препятствия) – proactive interference is when an old memory makes it more difficult or impossible to remember a new memory. Retroactive interference occurs when new information interferes with your ability to remember previously learned information. The more similar two or more events are to one another, the more likely interference will occur.
- Motivated forgetting (стимул забыть) – forgetting something traumatic because of the pain and sorrow felt.
- Memory never stored (невозможность сохранить в памяти) – received information is not sending to long-term memory, simply discarding details because they are not needed for discrimination.
Question: how are you dealing with forgotten paragraph that you have just read?
